Michael ShowalterΒ (born June 17, 1970) is an American director, writer, and producer. He first achieved recognition as a cast member onΒ MTV'sΒ The State, which aired from 1993 to 1995. He andΒ David WainΒ created theΒ Wet Hot American SummerΒ franchise, with Showalter co-writing and starring inΒ Wet Hot American SummerΒ (2001) and theΒ NetflixΒ series. Showalter wrote and directedΒ The Baxter(2005), in which he starred withΒ Michelle Williams,Β Justin Theroux, andΒ Elizabeth Banks. Both films featured many of his co-stars fromΒ The State, and so do several of his other projects. Showalter is also a co-creator, co-producer, actor, and writer for the TV seriesΒ Search Party. He directed the 2017 filmΒ The Big SickΒ and the 2021 filmΒ The Eyes of Tammy Faye, both of which were critically acclaimed.
