Metta Sandiford-ArtestΒ (bornΒ Ronald William Artest Jr.; November 13, 1979), previously legally namedΒ Metta World Peace, is an American former professional basketballΒ player who played 19 seasons in theΒ National Basketball Association (NBA). Under the name Ron Artest, he playedΒ college basketballΒ for theΒ St. John's Red Storm. He was drafted by theΒ Chicago BullsΒ in the first round of theΒ 1999 NBA draft. In 2001, he signed with theΒ Indiana Pacers, where he won theΒ NBA Defensive Player of the Year AwardΒ and was also named anΒ NBA All-StarΒ in 2004. Later that year, he was involved in anΒ on-court altercationΒ between the Pacers and theΒ Detroit Pistons, and was suspended for the remainder of theΒ 2004β05 season. Weeks after the start of theΒ 2005β06 season, he was traded to theΒ Sacramento Kings, and spent theΒ 2008β09 seasonΒ with theΒ Houston Rockets. In 2009, he signed with theΒ Los Angeles Lakers, and helped the team win theirΒ NBA championshipΒ inΒ 2010. In 2011, he legally changed his name to Metta World Peace, and continued to play with the Lakers until 2013, where he signed with theΒ New York Knicks. After a year of hiatus from the NBA, he returned to the Lakers for his last season in 2015 before retiring the following year.
