Lawrence Edward KasdanΒ (born January 14, 1949) is an American filmmaker. He is the co-writer of theΒ Star WarsΒ filmsΒ The Empire Strikes BackΒ (1980),Β Return of the JediΒ (1983),Β The Force AwakensΒ (2015), andΒ Solo: A Star Wars StoryΒ (2018). He also wroteΒ Raiders of the Lost ArkΒ (1981) andΒ The BodyguardΒ (1992), and is the writer-director ofΒ Body HeatΒ (1981),Β The Big Chill (1983),Β SilveradoΒ (1985),Β The Accidental Tourist (1988), andΒ DreamcatcherΒ (2003). Kasdan is known for updating old Hollywood genresβ€”film noir, science fiction, and Westernsβ€”in a classical dramatic style with quick-witted dialogue while dealing with contemporary social themes. As a director, he has made various personal films that examine characters and generations. Kasdan has been nominated for four Academy Awards: as a producer for Best Picture nomineeΒ The Accidental Tourist, for which he was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, and for Best Original Screenplay for bothΒ The Big Chill andΒ Grand CanyonΒ (1991). He has often collaborated with his wife, Meg Kasdan, his brother,Β Mark Kasdan, and his two sons,Β Jonathan KasdanΒ andΒ Jake Kasdan.
