Joseph Matthew AlwynΒ (born 21 February 1991) is an English actor. Alwyn made his feature film debut as the titular character inΒ Ang Lee's 2016 war dramaΒ Billy Lynn's Long Halftime WalkΒ and has since played roles in films such asΒ The FavouriteΒ (2018),Β Boy ErasedΒ (2018),Β Mary Queen of ScotsΒ (2018),Β HarrietΒ (2019),Β Catherine Called BirdyΒ (2022), andΒ The BrutalistΒ (2024), as well as theΒ HuluΒ drama seriesΒ Conversations with FriendsΒ (2022). Born inΒ KentΒ and raised inΒ North London, Alwyn developed an interest in acting during his teenage years. He acted in student productions atΒ the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He obtainedΒ BAΒ degrees in English literature and drama and acting from theΒ University of BristolΒ (2012) and theΒ Royal Central School of Speech and DramaΒ (2015), respectively.
